(WIP) Team Plasma Genesect Deck
Deck Primer
(all cards in this deck are subject to change)
My pitiful attempt at making team plasma genesect somewhat viable. Here's my reasoning behind all the cards:
- While I was initially conflicted with which ace spec tool to use for genesect, I came to the conclusion that it would probably be best to go for the G booster over the G scope. 100 damage alone for 3 energy is nowhere near impressive or good enough to have in a modern setting like expanded, so I felt that the G booster would at least do decent enough damage to threaten the opposing pokemon to an extent. In addition to this, the 2 energy discard requirement would allow you to re-use its ability to basically "boss's orders" without using a supporter. Granted, it might be annoying to set up, and as of now I have no real way of retreiving grass energies from the discard pile, so this isn't exactly a consistent attack you can pull off.
- As for the supporting pokemon (all team plasma as well, of course), they both primarily serve as utility to keep the genesects competitive. The umbreon's ability can be stacked several times, and serve as a method to buff the genesect's fragile 170HP to be able to withstand some attacks in the absence of other tool cards that do the same. The magnezone may be switched out for something later, but it's primarily here for its own ability allowing for the use of 2 supporter cards per turn; something I think that this deck will definitely need (for now at least), making it possible to use cards like the shadow triad and Gardenia's vigor for a relatively easier way to recharge a genesect.
- Arven is just there to easily search for the ace spec and an additional item card such as buddy buddy poffin to simplify the setup process. While very good, I feel like I can optimize Arven a bit better if I perhaps consider other tool cards for the other Pokemon so he doesn't seem wasted as a glorified item search supporter card. There are also other ways of finding tool cards though, so I might just reduce the amount in the deck at the very least.
- Boss's orders mainly exists to ensure that I can somewhat control the game situation and as a backup method in the event that I may not be able to use genesect's ability for some reason because of something like path to the peak. Like Arven, I may consider lowering the count in the future.
- buddy buddy poffin is self-explanatory.
- Colress is simply draw power. While there may be more consistent alternatives, I feel that colress is the best pick for this deck for the theme and so it can be more frequently taken back from the discard pile with shadow triad.
- Colress machine can allow me to search the deck for one of the four plasma energies to get a quick setup for genesect. There might be better ways to find plasma energies considering that they count as special energies, but until I find a better item that does so then I think this is a fine card to pick.
- Gardenia's vigor mainly helps with instantly setting up a genesect when needed, and can also help with draw power. However, given the already excessive amount of supporters in this deck, I might switch her out for a pokemon or item that does a similar ability.
- Hypnotoxic laser just serves as a way of hopefully getting some extra damage out and potentially keeping a pokemon in for an extra turn for genesect to finish it off.
- Shadow triad acts as a failsafe to retrieve any team plasma card, whether it be a Pokemon or trainer card, from the discard pile to be used again. Obviously quite useful for a plasma-focused deck, but it unfortunately doesn't account for any of the pre-evolution Pokemon nor for non-plasma cards such as grass energies or regular items.
- Switch is self-explanatory. Simply a way to bail out supporting Pokemon vulnerable to attack.
- Vs seeker primarily just helps with making sure I don't run out of resources to use for setup and recovery. This combined with magnezone's ability can essentially make it so I can frequently use all my supporter cards to great effect for the best results.
- Aromatic energy is self-explanatory. Makes it so the genesect can't be affected by things such as poison or sleep.
Weaknesses to address:
- lack of grass energy draw power (both from deck and discard)
- somewhat scuffed recovery method for when genesect dies
- no alternative methods of attack apart from genesect
- the concerning lack of stadium cards (none of the team plasma ones are very useful, and I have yet to find a stadium that can help this deck specifically)
- power creep in general lol (may be fixed with th addition of more modern Pokemon)
I really wanna see if I can truly make this deck work, and while I doubt it can really reliably win against many other expanded decks, I feel like having a deck with a niche like this would be cool to run and try for a bit. Improvements are definitely needed, but I'm optimistic!
