Giratina VSTAR Expanded (August 2023)
Deck Primer
Overview
A deck that has been surprising people at recent tournaments, Giratina VSTAR is essentially the modern Tinachomp GX. The deck plays nearly exactly the same way, but instead of using G-Zigzagoons, you now use Comfeys to get cards into the Lost Zone among other cards. The idea is that you build your Lost Zone pile gradually, netting about 2-3 cards per turn. That way your end board is amazing, where you no longer need to worry about damage to take prizes.
In addition, the original creator of the deck is Kaname Uchida, who piloted the deck at the recent Firehouse Tabletop & Games tournaments. A user named "remsremy" stole the deck from somewhere and took credit for making it despite not being the original author. So I took the liberty of crediting the actual maker of the list.
How To Play
Important to note, as with all decks in Expanded, don't follow such a linear gameplan. What I mean is that I will explain how to play the deck in general, but it is best to adapt to the game situations as you see fit, rather than following what I say here every time since it will lead to very predictable outcomes for your opponent to exploit.
Giratina VSTAR: The main star of the deck, Tina VSTAR hits hard with 280 damage, making it able to KO all Tag Teams and VSTARs with no damage modifiers. Star Requiem is challenging to set up since getting 10 cards into the Lost Zone is easier said than done. But once you get it online, damage becomes irrelevant and taking your next 4 Prizes is much easier. Lost Impact can help accelerate the process of pitching cards into the Lost Zone, but you have to know when its appropriate to pitch either 2 Lightnings or just 1 DDE.
Naganadel & Guzzlord GX: A staple of most dragon decks, Nagalord GX is one of the best, if not the best Tag Team in the format right now. Chaotic Order is very easy to set up, requiring only a Koko + manual attachment play. Being able to take 2 Prize Cards that easily is vital, because it essentially makes the game 4 vs 6 Prizes in your favor and you can grab important cards that are prized, if needed. Jet Pierce may not seem that interesting at first, but when you consider the fact that Nagalord's regular attack cost is essentially the same as its GX attack and 180 KOs all support mons, you see that Nagalord can carry games for you when needed. It helps that Tina VSTAR is a 2 Prizer, not a 3 Prizer like its predecessor meaning Nagalord is even better now. That means Nagalord can potentially net you 4 Prizes on its own, putting less pressure on you to set up your Lost Zone more quickly. The fact that you can pair it with Star Requiem for very easy Prizes is great.
Comfey, Cramorant, Hawlucha: Comfey is straightforward, you use it as a single-prize pivot while setting up both your Lost Zone and board. This is the one of the many advantages that Comfey has over G-Zigzagoon from Tinachomp, in that it functions a LOT better as a single-prize pivot mon and you get some consistency with it. Cramorant is to help you with putting damage on the board on the Active or dealing with single-prize attackers like Meloetta. Hawlucha + Muscle Band is meant to help you hit 320 to OHKO Shadow Rider VMAX which works, but Temple of Sinnoh + Shadow Mist is a diffcult combo to break out of (one of the weaknesses of this deck) but its still a way for you to better manage that matchup.
Finally, as mentioned previously, do not focus on pitching 10 cards into the Lost Zone as soon as possible. This deck works exponentially better when you are more focused on getting your attackers going than pitching Lost Zone cards only. You should take a more passive approach in the sense that you let your Lost Zone build up overtime. If your opponent is too slow in setting up, it works in your favor because you'll have either close to or exactly 10 cards in the Lost Zone, giving you the edge since you have 2 ways of taking 4 Prizes very easily. If you're playing a faster paced deck, then you play Tina VSTAR exactly like you're playing Tinachomp. Is this deck BDIF? No. But it certainly is a deck that you don't want to underestimate since it can get sneaky wins.
