Busted Mysterious Box
Deck Primer
This is my favorite Single Prizer deck from Silver Tempest. It is so busted, I'm currently on a 10-win streak and I'm playing on TCG Live, so it includes a lot of Lugia (and I don't have a hard counter for Lugia, it even resists my attacks!)
The deck is obviously playing the [Mystery Charge] Claydol, which is the center of the deck. This is why the only supporter I play is Grant (since I can get it back in my hands). You need to get two Claydol in play as fast as possible, which is why I use Snorlax as a setup Pokemon to draw Quickly. Most of the time, two Claydol is enough, but try to head toward 3 Claydol toward the end of the game since you will eventually run out of energy in the deck and the opponent might get rid of your Training Court.
Main attacker is Stonjourner that hits for a wooping 190 damage, 2HKO most Pokemons in the game, but I also have Galarian Zapdos and Terrakion to play the stall game, if I'm stuck. Worse case scenario, it is even possible to paralyze EVERY SINGLE TURN with Zapdos and KO with Terrakion to be immune next turn, but this is no fun ;). Or to be quicker you can also alternate each turn between Zapdos and Terrakion, since Terrakion retreat cost is 3, the same as the attack cost.
Furthermore, I have some other tech that are really awesome in the deck:
- Yveltal can be nice against Lugia, Durant, Mew and other deck that plays special energy.
- Jynx is so nice because it doesn't give prize cards when killed by a V (obviously) AND only requires 2 Energies to attack. The Energy cost is crucial here because it will happen that you will lose your Stadium or one Claydol so you won't be able to attach three Energies. And it is a good proxy to Terrakium when playing against a deck with Shred (Hello Mew, Duraludon, Regidraco!)
- Zygarde is also AWESOME. This is a perfect surprise late game, so don't reveal until the perfect moment. Even with Stonjourner you can't OHKO Vstar or Vmax, so you will find smart player who will just retreat their Pokemon since they know you don't play Boss. Wait until the opponent has 2 or 1 Prize cards left and throw the Zygarde to a big surprise 160 or 200 damage on the bench. Also perfect to KO careless Crobat/Lumineon. And indeed you see that I don't even play Pokemon Catcher, which makes the Zygarde even more important (I don't play the catcher because of the randomness, I find other cards more useful).
- Last but not least: Ditto! This card might be cutable, but it is acually really good for many reasons. Obviously, this can replace any of the attacker that were killed or discarded earlier in th game. But also, it is Normal type, so you can copy Stonjourner's attack to deal 190 damage to Lugia, (or Mew, ShadowRider), totally ignoring the Resistance. Other fun thing to do: You can copy Terrakion attack AND next turn use the attack of another Pokemon. This way, unlike with Terrakion, you won't have to retreat and lose 3 Energies so you can start preparing your bench by attaching energies there.
Main challenges of the deck and additional tips:
- Consistency: Obviously, the deck can't play any supporters so if you have a bad hand, it can be hard to get out of this situation. Snorlax and Greninja are there to make the start as good as possible. Luckily, once this deck is started, it is nearly unstoppable so spare all efforts to make your start as good as possible. It is totally fine to give up two, or even three prize cards early game to setup your board since with Zapdos, Terrakion and Zygarde you can take 6 prize cards at the same time than preventing your opponent to take a single one.
- Don't overbench!!!: Since this is a box style deck, I play many basic Pokemon. It could be tempting to bench them early game to make Snorlax draw more cards, but be careful since you might need that space for another Baltoy or another attacker that you didn't have earlier. And don't waste/discard your Nets too early, they will save your life!
- Beware of Boss: Terrakion is immune to attacks, so obviously you'll get boss'ed. Try to predict when and what you'll get boss, maybe by preparing another Baltoy or by placing a Lucky Egg strategically. When you paralyze opponents with Zapdos, you might even get boss trap, often a Claydol because of the 2 retreat costs. By chance you can attack energy with the ability to retreat, but if you don't have any backup, it is useless. Keeping a Net in hand can help to get out of these Boss Trap.
- Beware of counter-stadiums: Training Court is crucial for the deck when you only have 2 Claydol, especially late game. Be sure to have energy in hand or another stadium when you feel like they will remove the Training Court. Preparing a third Claydol is also a good idea.
- Draw is less important late game: When you are setup, the deck you go by itself. Don't hesitate to ditch the Greninja for another attacker or a third Claydol.
Finally:
DON'T GIVE UP
And I say this at two levels: At the game level but also at the learning of the deck. The deck is really good at making comebacks. As I said, even when the opponent has 3 or 4 prize cards in advance, you can still win! Also, this deck is not that easy to play. There are a lot of moving pieces, a lot of decisions to take (unless you take the easy way and paralyze each turn :P ). It took me a while to make the deck playable and to learn how to play it, but so far I'm really satisfied!
I hope you enjoy, and let me know if you have any idea to improve it!
Things I'm personally thinking of changing:
- One or two more Fighting Energy
- Fourth Scoop-up Net
- Fourth Training Court
- Fourth Trekking Shoes (Or Replacing by Gutsy Pickaxe)
- Adding a counter to Big Parasol as the Parlyze is my last resort against things like PikaFly Vmax
